“Blest be the tie that binds our hearts our hearts in Christian love:
The fellowship of kindred minds is like to that above.”
It has often been said, “The family who prays together, stays together.” One can say the same of the church: “The church family that prays together, stays together.” But I would like to add a different take on that: “The church family that plays together, stays together.”
Proverbs 17:22 says, “A merry heart doeth good, like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.” (KJV) This is where we get the phrase, “Laughter is good medicine.” I think we do a lot to serve those around us. But we need to take care of ourselves, as well. Outreach is vital, but “inreach” is important, too!
Let’s look for ways to have fun together this summer. Grab a group and go for Sunday Brunch after church any Sunday of the summer. Try to include people you don’t know very well.
Who wants to go see a comedy? Let’s grab dinner and then see a movie. How about a beach day? Let’s have some fun!
We’re looking at fun, Southern California activities for our youth this summer. Would you like to help by driving? We’d like to take them to Santa Monica Pier one day. Perhaps take them back to the Palm Springs Tram. Maybe up to Huntington Library or Reagan Library. Or maybe we can check out the Harry Potter exhibit at Universal Studios. Just doing things that people from all over the world come to Southern California to do. Some of our kids have never had these opportunities. And you can enjoy them as well.
I’m taking my kids to the Hollywood Bowl on the 4th of July. The band, Chicago, will be performing. Can you imagine them singing, “Saturday, in the park, I think it was the 4th of July…”? It doesn’t get much better than that! Not only Chicago, but the entire L.A. Philharmonic Orchestra will be playing, and a full fireworks show will cap off the night. Those in attendance can bring their own picnic dinners and enjoy the comforts of the Bowl. I like to park in one of the satellite lots and take their shuttle into Hollywood. Who would like to join us? Grab some tickets online, let’s caravan to the parking lots, ride the shuttle together, sit together during dinner, and enjoy a great night. If you’re interested, talk to me.
What are some other fun things we can do?
The church is often accused of being stiff, boring, and dismal. But Jesus did not call us to dismality (yeah, I just made up that word). Jesus came that we might have life, and have it abundantly! Rather than being a dying church, let’s be a living church. Let’s be filled with the Spirit’s life and laughter. Let’s have fun together!
In Christ’s Love & Service,
